I’m running a little late, but thanks to the October, 2007, contributors to the site — your comments and/or articles help support cubicle warriors in the workplace:

Anita Bruzzese of 45 things. What a great blog with superior insights for those of us who work in cubes.

Andrew of Great Management. Andrew and I have had a virtual and real conversation across the “pond” between Washington State and the United Kingdom. He has great insight and perspective.

Barbara Safani of Career Solvers. I subscribe to Barbara’s blog because she has consistently good advice. Her posts on The 30-second Resume Test simply rock.

Adam Salamon of Adam Salamon. Adam writes about Gen Y and Personal Branding. As I noted to one who asked which blogs I subscribe to and why, I said that of all the “Gen Y” blogs out there, Adam has the clearest voice, the most rational reasoning, and contributes to the conversation about career management for all of us.

Sarah Dillon of the Naked Translator. Sarah’s a freelance translator, living and working in London. And she has great pictures from one of my favorite cities — Dublin, Ireland, while she is Translating in Dublin’s Fair City.

The Labour Market Information Blog writes about resources, links, analysis and articles concerning career management and labour market issues. Yes, it’s true — Cube Rules is read in about 35 different countries because 40-million of us work in cubes on Corporate Earth.

Jennifer Mannion of Heal Pain Naturally stopped by as part of Successful Blog’s second anniversary celebration to wish my wife and I a great wedding anniversary — which both happened to be on October 24th.

Rebecca Thorman of Modite, a blog focused on what I call career management for Gen Y. Rebecca writes about a lot that I agree with — and a lot I don’t. It’s a great conversation and we learn from each other.

And, of course, some of you will see comments by “Wife” with no URL to search for as if she has no Internet presence. Ah, no. Here are a couple: The Successful and Outstanding Relationship and her career site aptly named Kate Herrick. She is wonderful.

Thanks for the contributions; they are really appreciated.

Scot

Given the 50,000 places you can put information about yourself in your online newspapers that will help your network, how do you decide where to put your stuff?

Well, you can create your own criteria and do well. But, the world is changing.

Dan Schawbel notes that “LinkedIn might have eliminated the need for traditional resumes.” He might be right. His basic contention: since you are recruited using what is on your social site (e.g., LinkedIn), why have a second resume? Just print your resume from LinkedIn and simplify your life.

Now, we all know it’s not as simple as that — yet.

There is great truth to what Dan is talking about. For example, in my situation, I am building out my personal site — http://scotherrick.com — and trying to turn that into a personal branding site.

While there is a lot of work to be done on that site (I’m working it!), Dan’s post also made me realize that I need to coordinate my LinkedIn profile — which really is pretty poor — with the work I’m doing on my personal career site.

You see, a personal brand is really about the same message getting across using all of the marketing channels one uses to reach potential “customers.” Corporations and politicians call it “staying on message.”

While perhaps excessive given the wonderful uniqueness we all have as human beings, there is a lot of truth to “staying on message.”

What I learned from Dan’s article was that my LinkedIn profile and my career site were not in sync with the same messaging and I need to go fix them. As you are reading this on the day of posting, I haven’t fixed them — but I will.

Here are the two questions for you:

How many places is your name out there online?

Are all of those messages consistent with how you want to be viewed as your personal brand?

More work to be done. It’s a good thing.

Scot
