Recruiters and hiring managers, of course, will put your name in a search engine and see what they can find out about you.

But if you have a blog, they will go further by going to your blog, checking out what you have to say and seeing how well you write.

In Guidance on blogging for jobs, Sarah E. Needleman writes that:

Ryan Loken, a Wal-Mart Stores Inc. recruitment manager, says he spends one to two hours a week searching through blogs for new talent or additional information about the candidates he has interviewed. “Blogs are a tool in the tool kit,” he says. Since he joined the Bentonville, Ark., retail giant three years ago, Mr. Logen estimates that Web journals have helped him fill 125 corporate jobs.

The article shows some of the advantages of blogging and perhaps getting a job offer.

My two comments on using a blog to find a job:

1. Don’t make blogging for jobs your entire way of finding a new position — marketing your work is still marketing all channels to finding positions to work.
2. The Internet is a very public place. Before you blog, be sure your writing is worth reading — and won’t blow a job for you before it is ever offered.

Consider a blog the front page of your newspaper you publish. In this global economy, consider what you share with the world in the context of you wanting people to consider you for work.
