Survey Results: Are you online?

Personality Inventory The survey, the survey, please take the survey I asked and then nagged about. It was a survey on the amount of online presence you have when you come to the site as you work in cubes.

My theory was that most of the people coming here were not doing more than online surfing for the site. Or, perhaps, a place like LinkedIn. I fully expected that 80% of the people to simply be surfing. How many people do you know working in cubes that have web sites?

The results came in and I was quite surprised – which is why I put the survey up in the first place.

Even accounting for a large margin of error, fully 88% of the respondents had a web site, blog, were on LinkedIn or other social sites. Only 12% surfed without another online presence.

My theory is still one where most cube workers do not have an online presence. However, if they start searching for career management information, they also decide to go online.

To test this, take a look at the team or department you work with right now. Go down the row of cubes and simply ask each one if they do anything more online than surf the Internet (or play games). I would still suspect that the vast majority of cube workers don’t have an online presence – but could use career management advice.

The reason this is important to me is that great career management advice needs to be marketed. If it is marketed only online, only online people will be interested – and one misses the other 90% of the market that would be interested in the advice.

If, on the other hand, most cube workers are online, it focuses the work in a different direction.

Did any of you try the “walk down the cube row survey?” What were your results?

Well, at my current job I don’t have to walk down the row. I have found everyone’s Facebook page, twittered with a few. But then again, I am a sys admin and I sit near the help desk folks. Do we even count? :)

@Deanna McNeil - Of course you count! Interestingly, in the IT business, so that is a good fact to know. Thanks for “walking down the row!”
