I am what people call “mid-career” in that I’ve pushed through the beginning career stuff and am not ready to retire — unless I can afford to retire!
But most of my working life, I’ve asked myself one basic question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Then you get all of the weird responses like “follow your passion” or, worse, “follow your passion and the money will follow.” Let’s start with the simple: how do you figure out your passions when you are so close to what you do?
Then, of course, everyone tells you to define your “values.” And figure out your purpose in life. Like you can set a “mission statement” for your reasons for being on the planet. I always had problems with this since I couldn’t get passed the 5,000 things I needed to get done on the runway while dealing with 75% corporate churn in a given year.
But Paul, over at the Idea Sandbox does a pretty good job of laying out how to Pave Your Life Roadmap. He provides the steps, the objectives and even some tips on getting started for building that roadmap.
I wish he had written this 20-years ago…
Hat tip to Phil Gerbyshak of Make It Great and Roll Your Own: 5 for Friday for pointing out this article.
