Follow-ship as Career Management

Followship as Career ManagementBased upon the business books written, you’d have to think that CEO’s are the dumbest people in the world.

They aren’t, of course, but if you were from Mars and came and evaluated the the titles of books out there, you’d know that CEO’s need help.

How many books have you seen out there in the business section that talk about vision? Or making the customer number one? Or taking your organization from good to great or some variation? Or, my favorite, how to be a leader. All oriented to the supreme business leader.

Need some help on how to become a leader? Take a seminar. Read the books. Check out the PowerPoint’s. Want to implement becoming a leader? Check out your favorite consultant dot com.

There is a ton written about how to become a leader.

For followers? Not so much.

Following, apparently, is easy. Do what the leader says to do. Be inspired by the leader. Know that the leader’s view of the world is the right one. Go forth and follow.

Right.

Most of the 40-million knowledge workers are followers. And while there is individual leadership, there is far more follow-ship involved for those of us who toil away in cubes.

Being a good follower is critical to becoming a Cubicle Warrior. Career Management is about knowing your choices, but also being a good follower.

We’ll take a look at follow-ship over the next few posts.

CEO’s, as leaders, are pretty smart people after all. But so are those that follow.

Its time we wrote for the followers.
