I don’t know about you, but I’ve had more than my share of dead ends in my career where I either felt I was placed in the wrong position or where I felt I was in a rut with nowhere to go. You have too, right?
Looking back on those times and where I am today, I’ve learned that being bored in the job or being in a rut is not the end of the world. It simply tells you that there is change coming in your work. While things may get bumpy for a while and where you end up may not be where you thought, in the end, you’ll end up doing something better than you are doing now.
It takes persistence and patience. And some impatience thrown in as well.
Over at Leading Edge Career Clips, Deb points us to a new book from Timothy Butler called Getting Unstuck: How Dead Ends Become New Paths. In it, he describes the six-phase cycle of “impasse and vision.”
I never charted how I moved from being in a rut to moving on to something new. I’m going to check this one out. It sounds like there is some good stuff to learn here. I just ordered up the book. I’ll let you know how it is.
